Julius O. Ihonvbere

Took a B.A. Combined Honors degree in History and Political Science from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), Ile-Ife. 

His MA in International Affairs from Carleton University, Ottawa. and a

PhD in Political Science from the University of Toronto in Canada.

He has thought various courses at: University of Ife, Ile-Ife, Nigeria Ogun State University, Ago-Iwoye, Nigeria, University of Port Harcourt, Port Harcourt, Nigeria. He worked at the Ford Foundation’s New York office as Program Officer in Pluralism and Governance in the Peace and Social Justice Program until 2002 when he voluntarily withdrew his services to return to Nigeria from a 12-year self-exile. An activist scholar he was Secretary ASUU- University of Ife (now OAU)

Vice Chair, ASUU, University of Port Harcourt Chairman, ASUU, University of Port Harcourt Member of the United Democratic Front of Nigeria (UDFN) Member, Joint Action Committee on Nigeria (JACON)- a coalition of foreign based prodemocracy organisations that opposed military rule including NADECO and UDFN)

His research interests are in state-civil society relations, constitutionalism, demilitarization, democratization, globalization, political institutions and structures, popular movements, leadership, development and human rights in the developing world with special interest in Africa.

Professor Ihonvbere is a recipient of numerous national and international honours and awards including:Order of the Officer of the Niger (OON).

First Mario Zamora Memorial Award for academic excellence (Association of Third World Studies).

Knight of Saint Christopher (KSC)

Paul Harris Fellow (Rotary International)

An Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Administrative Management of Nigeria, he listed in Who is Who in Nigeria as well as in the Profiles of African Scientists.

Author/co-author/editor of over a dozen academic/policy books and monographs, over 100 journal articles and book chapters, some of Professor Ihonvbere’s publications have appeared in numerous international journals including Africa Today, The Journal of Modern African Studies, International Politics, International Journal, Third World Quarterly, World Development, and The Journal of Political and Military Sociology. 

Professor Ihonvbere has served as (among numerous positions):

  • Chairman, Presidential Committee on the Bitumen Project Implementation Committee (BPIC)
  • Special Adviser to the President of Nigeria on Policy and Programmes Monitoring
  • Speech Writer to the President of Nigeria
  • Secretary to the Government of Edo State.
  • Chairman, Strategic Planning Team (SPT), EDSG

Prof. Ihonvbere currently represents Owan Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives where he is Chairman, House Committee on Basic Education and Services.
